In the world of digitalization and technology, we now use smart assistance in our devices. We all are very much familiar with Cortana, Alexa, etc. These smart assistants have made our lives easier, our routines were smoother. These AI-based smart technologies are integrated into our electronic devices for our own comfort. A lot of us are more or less dependent on these smart assistants for, you know, playing a song. For those us who are, this is not the best of news. Microsoft is closing down Cortana across iOS and Android devices.

Microsoft has stated that the company is shifting to a more productivity-oriented adaptation of its smart technologies. This means that the first-generation Cortana integrated devices will also lose support. This includes Surface Headphones and Harman Kardon Invoke Smart Speakers. 2021 will see a completely new adaptation of Cortana across all devices and software.

The Development

Cortana will no longer be a Google Assistant; or a replacement to Alexa, for that matter. Microsoft has announced that by the coming 7th of September, 2020, they will pull the plug on Cortana skills for Windows.

Microsoft’s current focus is to shift Cortana from being an “assistant” to a “productive software” integrated with the Microsoft 365 suite. In the broader sense, Cortana is losing its full functionality. It might not be equipped with music integration or smart home controls anymore. But Microsoft believes that the limited number of features will make Cortana more complementary with the existing software. Furthermore, Microsoft wants to position Cortana in such a way that it does not directly compete with juggernauts like Amazon or Google.

As for Microsoft, they are making sure that their decision does not upset the customers. Users of HK Smart Speakers will receive a $50 gift card as a way to make up for the firmware update to come next year. On the other hand, the users of Surface Headphones will get a gift card of $25.

What are your thoughts on Microsoft’s decision to close down Cortana?
