bKash, the country’s leading MFS giant has recently published its financial reports for the Fiscal Year of 2021. According to the report, Gross revenue grew by 21.8% YoY from Tk 26,245 Mn in 2020 to Tk 31,963 Mn in 2021.

The company once again had a great year in terms of growth and customers acquisition! However, the growth of business comes at a price which in this case of bKash refers to a significant increase in investment and expenses to capitalize on the growth trend of the industry.

Hence, Loss after tax for bKash increased by 83.0% YoY from Tk 674 Mn in 2020 to Tk 1,234 Mn in 2021. This is the third consecutive year that bKash had seen a loss after tax.

So, can we conclude that bKash is not doing good just because they have seen negative profit after tax? Of course not! The MFS industry is still in the growth phase in Bangladesh and to sustain in this highly competitive industry, a business must capitalize on the growth phase. So, in the short run having a loss is okay when all the other metrics are going in favor of the business.
