Apple is set to launch its thinnest iPhone to date, the iPhone 17 Air, expected to be approximately 2 millimetres thinner than current models. The device is anticipated to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, marking a first for Apple in bringing this advanced display technology to a non-Pro model reportedly.

The slim profile is achieved through advanced Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) technology, combining touch and display layers into a single unit. It will include a simplified camera setup with a 48 MP rear camera and a 24 MP front camera. Powered by Apple’s A19 chipset with 8 GB of RAM, it is also expected to feature Apple’s first in-house 5G modem.

Another major change is the removal of the physical SIM card slot, with the phone relying solely on eSIM technology. This move aligns with Apple’s vision for a wireless future but may face challenges in markets with low eSIM adoption.

The iPhone 17 Air is also viewed as a step toward foldable devices, serving as a testing ground for new technologies that could feature in future foldable iPhones and iPads. Rumours suggest the starting price could be $899, with a possibility of a higher price due to its premium features.

If released as planned, the iPhone 17 Air will surpass the 6.9 mm iPhone 6 to become Apple’s thinnest smartphone ever, redefining the company’s iconic lineup.
