Threads Introduces Stand-Alone Profile Deletion Without affecting Instagram2 min read
The Threads team has finally tackled a key user concern since the app’s launch by allowing users to independently delete their Threads profiles without affecting their Instagram presence. This enhancement offers users a significant degree of autonomy when managing both platforms.
The announcement, shared by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, revealed an updated process in Threads settings under “Account” or “Delete or Deactivate Profile.” This newly introduced feature allows users to deactivate their Threads profile. If not reactivated within a 30-day window, the profile will be permanently deleted, while the user’s Instagram profile remains completely unaffected.
At the outset, Threads and Instagram profiles were closely connected, with Threads being built on Instagram’s infrastructure, making the Threads profile essentially a subset of the Instagram presence. This integration raised concerns among users who wanted to keep their Instagram profile but were uncertain about Threads. Instagram committed to resolving this matter, and the latest update affords users increased control over each profile.
While Threads and Instagram profiles remain connected in a crucial way (mandating an Instagram presence for a Threads profile), users now have the ability to remove their Threads presence without affecting their Instagram identity.
As Threads continues to expand, there is a growing anticipation that it will become more independent of Instagram. However, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri clarified that direct messages (DMs) are not currently a priority for Threads. While there is a potential for Threads profiles to be linked back to Instagram DMs in the future, connecting them to Messenger and WhatsApp inboxes, the Threads team does not plan to prioritize this in the immediate future.
Threads users now have the welcomed option to delete their Threads profiles independently, marking a positive step towards providing users with more control over their social media presence. As Threads continues to evolve, the separation from Instagram is expected to become even more pronounced, although the integration of DMs remains a feature yet to be prioritized by the Threads team. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving social media landscape.
