Jacket or a Bag?

Every Saturday morning in Great Britain, and probably all across the word, the most heard word is probably “Damn, I forgot my shopping bag”. This small, yet collective sigh costs customers thousands of dollars in mistakes every year. “I’ll remember next time” never works out as they listen to small shuntings from their wives, parents et cetera. “I told you so”, “You always forget”, “You never listen to me”, the words are pretty much stock at that point. Sometimes, the Brits resorted to weirder alternatives. According to a research by Aldi, alternatives include cardboard boxes, buckets, baby changing bags, pet carriers and, for 2% of respondents, a wheelbarrow.  And with every passing weekend, it’s always one weekend away from remembering that small, yet crucial essential resulting in weirder alternatives.

Aldi saw these small sighs of agony, and got to work. “How about we take one of the most worn outfits in Britain, and make it transformable with, one of the most frequent mistakes on a weekend”, their thought not mine. They figured, the jacket culture in the UK is spiked, yet it is bland. “How about we make a jacket that can be transformed into a bag whenever necessary?”, their thoughts again. So they got to work, the plan was to make lives easier for the 46% of Brits who forgets their bag while grocery shopping on a regular basis. Those in Yorkshire and Northern Ireland top the list of those most likely to buy a new bag after forgetting theirs, with one in five (21%) revealing they buy a new bag at least once a week.

“What if you could wear the bag?” was the motto behind this out-of-the-box solution. They made a jacket that could be transformed into a reusable shopping bag within 10 seconds. The waterproof navy bomber has a funnel neck, large pockets and Aldi’s blue and orange detailing. In seconds, it folds and converts into a grocery-sized carrier ready for the checkout. The jacket is aptly named “Aldi’s Swag for Life Jacket”. The story doesn’t end there. “Aldi Store” written all over the bags also works as an activation, where bewildered people will watch as someone in the checkout line quickly converts their jacket to a checkout bag!
