Millions of Americans lost their sources of income due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, except Eric Yuan. Yuan is the creator of Zoom, which is a video conferencing app. Nevertheless, before the Coronavirus outbreak, people were bound to work and socialize primarily online. As a result, the share price of Zoom grew exponentially.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Yuan has accumulated a fortune worth $7.5 billion. And all these happened one year after joining the three-comma club.

And this article is a tribute to Eric Yuan, the founder of Zoom.

Yuan is 49 years oldย  Chinese American who leads a major Silicon Valley company. His birthplace is the Shandong province of China. Yuan’s parents were mining engineers. He completed his Graduation in Mathematics. Besides that, he also got a post-graduate degree in engineering.

In the beginning, Yuan started his career in Japan and continued there for 4 years. Meanwhile, Bill Gates gives a speech about the dot-com bubble which inspired him to become an entrepreneur. Therefore, Eric Yuan moved to California’s Silicon Valley to work for an internet startup.

However, The United States denied his visa application eight times before allowing him to move towards California in 1997. According to The Financial Times, the reason behind the multiple visa rejection is disagreement with the official responsible for his immigration.

According to Forbes and CNBC, Yuan devoted himself to writing computer codes. Besides that, playing soccer was the only hobby he got that period of time.

Before founding Zoom he was a vice president at Cisco Systems which is a telecommunications equipment company. Yuan worked for WebEx which is another video conferencing company. Eventually, Cisco acquired this company in 2007.

The Motivation behind founding Zoom:

Back in the times of living in China Yuan and his girlfriend enrolled in different colleges. The distance between them was 10 hours train journey. Eric Yuan stated to Forbes that, he only got to see his girlfriend twice in a year after 10 hours of a hectic train ride. Eventually, they got married. However, the bitter experience sparked his curious mind to build something which will connect them in a video by clicking a button.

Finally, The experience gave him the idea to incorporate video into the telephone. Likewise, the conference based system of Cisco. Eric Yuan Focused to build a fun user-experience in such an application. Hence, Zoom is renowned for virtual backgrounds as it allows users to make it appear as if they are on the beach or in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.
