CCI Bangladesh (Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages Limited) has received an honorable mention in the SDG Brand Champion in Responsible Consumption and Production at the SDG Brand Champion Award 2024 on September 10, 2024. CCI Bangladesh is actively advancing its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) – ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ through the ‘World Without Waste’ initiative.

The program promotes a circular economy and reduces plastic pollution by integrating sustainability principles across the product lifecycle with a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) waste management approach, said a press release.

‘World Without Waste’ initiative is strategically designed, primarily centering around the three ‘R’s— reduce, reuse and recycle. The program begins with ‘Reduction’ by introducing lightweight bottles, resulting in a remarkable 40% decrease in plastic usage within its packaging. Then starts the process of ‘Reuse’ via the implementation of zero-waste packaging designs, including the groundbreaking 2L Kinley bottles crafted entirely from recycled PET. In other words, recycled resins are seamlessly integrated into the production process. Finally, the ‘Recycle’ method is implemented, where 5 thousand metric tons of plastic bottles are strategically recycled in a year through collection, sorting, cleaning, and other processes.

This initiative converts recovered bottles into high-quality recycled resins and fibers, repurposing them into many new products and thus it closes the loop on the circular economy.

Anowarul Amin, Director of Public Affairs Communications and Sustainability, CCI Bangladesh said, “We are honored to be acknowledged for our diligence and hard work. This signifies the power of collaborations for realizing SDGs. Collaboration amongst the government, civil society, and other stakeholders is crucial for building a sustainable future for Bangladesh, and to navigate the challenges we face. We now must focus on sustainable consumption and production patterns, responsible management of chemicals and waste, and reducing waste”.

It is notable that since the beginning of the ‘World Without Waste’ initiative, the company has collected over 20 thousand metric tons of plastic for recycling. This initiative has also created over 400 direct jobs in waste collection and recycling, providing sustainable livelihoods. Thousands of indirect jobs have been impacted, promoting economic opportunities by aligning with the SDGs. CCI Bangladesh had earlier won the ‘Bangladesh Innovation Award 2021’ by Bangladesh Brand Forum for sustainable manufacturing practices, and the ‘National Productivity and Quality Excellence Award’ by the Ministry of Industries.
