Biman Bangladesh Airlines Soars With 36% Sales Growth in Just Five Months

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is flying high, recording an impressive 36% surge in sales from September 2024 to January 2025, compared to the same period the previous year. This remarkable growth is fueled by competitive fare strategies, the lifting of sales restrictions, and smart revenue management reportedly.

The national flag carrier raked in a staggering Taka 4,057 crore during these five months—nearly Taka 1,100 crore more than the Taka 2,982 crore earned between September 2023 and January 2024, according to Biman’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Md Shafiqur Rahman.

  • BSP ticket sales saw a 37% rise.
  • Sales at Biman’s counters increased by 3%.
  • Online ticket purchases via its website skyrocketed by 27%.
  • Cargo sales hit record-breaking levels, with September 2024 and October 2024 experiencing growth rates of 146.23% and 101.96%, respectively.

Biman’s aggressive expansion strategy is also paying off in international markets. A Special Prorate Agreement (SPA) with ITA Airways has significantly boosted ticket sales to Italy and other European destinations.

Additionally, the airline is advancing key interline agreements, including:

  • Interline e-ticketing (IET) with Japan Airlines (JAL).
  • A comprehensive SPA with Turkish Airlines.
  • An SPA with Hainan Airlines.

Looking ahead, Biman is gearing up to launch a business-to-business (B2B) travel agent portal, making ticket purchases even more seamless. Plans to enable credit card payments in major markets like Italy, Canada, the UK, and Japan are also in the pipeline.

However, despite its sales success, fleet limitations remain a major hurdle. Biman is eager to expand flight frequencies and introduce new international routes, but its 21-aircraft fleet is stretched thin. Currently, the airline serves 25 global destinations, including:

London, Manchester, Toronto, Tokyo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, Riyadh, and Singapore.

With four Boeing 777-300 ERs, four Boeing 787-8s, two Boeing 787-9s, six Boeing 737s, and five Dash 8-400s, the airline is doing its best to keep up with rising demand and international competition.

With bold strategies, high-demand routes, and smart partnerships, Biman is proving its resilience and ambition. Now, all eyes are on how it tackles its fleet expansion challenge to reach even greater heights.
