Baidu Fires Back At Deepseek With New AI Model And Free Chatbot Access

China’s tech giant Baidu has just upped the stakes in the AI arms race, unveiling its latest X1 reasoning model while making its AI chatbot, Ernie Bot, free for all users. The move comes as competition in China’s AI sector intensifies, with Baidu looking to challenge the dominance of DeepSeek, the cost-efficient AI startup that shook the industry in January, reportedly.

In a WeChat announcement, Baidu introduced two major AI breakthroughs:

  • X1 reasoning model, which it claims rivals DeepSeek’s performance but at a lower cost.
  • Ernie 4.5, a foundation model that reportedly outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 across multiple benchmarks and boasts advanced reasoning abilities in understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution.

To further disrupt the AI landscape, Baidu is making Ernie Bot free for individual userstwo weeks ahead of schedule – eliminating the subscription fees that previously limited access to its latest AI models.

Baidu was one of China’s first companies to launch a generative AI model in 2023, but since then, competitors like ByteDance and Moonshot AI have been gaining ground. The rise of DeepSeek, which developed a highly efficient, open-source AI model, forced major players, including Baidu, to rethink their strategies.

Even Baidu itself incorporated DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model into its search engine. Meanwhile, competitors Tencent and Alibaba have made major AI investments:

  • Tencent launched an AI model that it claims responds faster than DeepSeek, while also integrating DeepSeek’s technology into WeChat.
  • Alibaba, partnering with Apple on AI for iPhones in China, has pledged a staggering $52 billion investment in AI and cloud computing over the next three years. It also released an upgraded AI assistant powered by its Qwen reasoning model.

In a major shift, Baidu announced plans to open-source its Ernie AI models starting June 30, following in DeepSeek’s footsteps. With AI competition heating up, Baidu’s latest move signals its determination to reclaim leadership in China’s rapidly evolving AI landscape.
