Bangladeshi Firms Partnered With US Telecom Giant Starlink

Several Bangladeshi companies have entered into partnerships with Starlink, the satellite internet service provider, to establish ground earth stations in Bangladesh. This collaboration aims to enhance internet connectivity across the country, particularly in remote areas and regions lacking sufficient telecommunications infrastructure. The agreements were finalized as a team from Starlink, the US-based telecommunications company, visited Bangladesh to oversee the collaboration, reportedly. The partnership includes space allocation, construction support, and the ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure.

The visit allowed local firms to better understand potential sites of interest for the ground stations. In some cases, these companies are offering their own properties for the stations, while in others, Starlink is considering properties within the Hi-Tech Park. Discussions regarding the locations and implementation details are ongoing, according to Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser.

Taiyeb expressed hope that Starlink’s service would significantly improve internet access throughout Bangladesh, particularly in its cities, remote areas, northern regions, and coastal areas, all of which are often affected by load shedding and natural disasters. He highlighted that the coverage of telecom-grade fibre networks in Bangladesh remains limited, and that the introduction of Starlink would greatly benefit entrepreneurs, freelancers, NGOs, and SMEs, particularly in the country’s most underserved areas.

In support of the initiative, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus wrote a letter to Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, on February 19, inviting him to visit Bangladesh and formally launch the Starlink satellite service. Yunus believes that Musk’s visit would offer an opportunity to meet the young innovators and entrepreneurs in Bangladesh who would be among the key beneficiaries of Starlink’s technology.

Additionally, Yunus has tasked his High Representative, Khalilur Rahman, with closely coordinating with the SpaceX team to ensure that all necessary work is completed to enable the launch of Starlink in Bangladesh within the next 90 working days.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in Bangladesh, providing uninterrupted internet access in areas where connectivity has long been a challenge.
