Ketchup of Fries?

Background :

Fries and Ketchups, two undisputed combinations that have had generations hooked over the year. Be it a side, a snack, the wombo combo always held its place as the silent, yet mouth-watering dish. With companies vying for its place in the worldโ€™s most popular side dish, one name stood out. It was Heinz. For over 150 years, Heinz was the go to name for the most premium ketchup out there. They sell over 655 million bottles of tomato ketchup every year, most of which are predicted to be dipped in fries.

However, there was a problem. Due to soaring prices, quantity became the preference for most people. Heinzโ€™s price rose as well by 28%. And for a trivial dish, the cutback was even more relevant. Fries would be served with cheaper sauces to reduce costs in most restaurants, bleeding Heinz out in its biggest market. But Heinz, they were not going to give away their biggest market share that easily. They knew a war against price reduction canโ€™t be won. However, marketing was something Heinz was always good at. So Kraft Heinz announced on 29th, October 2025 that it had invested another $80m in incremental marketing expenditure. And like every other time, it paid off incredibly

Insight

Heinz, like all other heritage brands, had marketed their heritage and iconism to fit the narrative. It was all about the subtleness. And for subtleness? This time it was a masterclass. Heinz noticed a niche detail in their logo. Was it their eyes, or did the logo look exactly like a fry box? Well, this subtle stroke of brilliance they turned this fry box, which was already their logo into a new narrative. You canโ€™t have fries, without Heinz, theyโ€™re inseparable.

Idea

So the stage was set. They had to prove to the world that you canโ€™t just dip the fries into any ketchups, it has to be Heinz. And for them to do it, they chose the simplest way. One which doesnโ€™t even need a read. They simply chose the visual of their logo and ingrained the fry box in it. Their new โ€œHeinz, Look Familiarโ€ campaign, launched on September 9, 2025 spoke no words, yet delivered everything it wanted to say, like a classic mic drop. It was like learning trivia for most people, that OOH moment was all they needed. The philosophy was simple, claiming the creative ownership of the duo that everyone sought after. Without Heinz, what are fries? They did not just design a campaign, they discovered the template. A reinforcement like none other.

Execution

It didnโ€™t just stop there. They started carefully placing their products in UberEats orders, and other places where the presence would be subtle, yet convincing. It successfully created a cognitive bias within people to stop their cart exactly where the Heinz Ketchup is. The numbers affirmed the story. The visuals spoke for themselves: in the US, points of distribution rose 9.78%, while Canada saw household penetration climb 3.38% to 10.31%, pushing gross sales value to $18.5m in 2025. Meanwhile, the UK posted a 4.37% lift in volume market share, and Mexico grew its volume share by 3.58%, ultimate proof that it simply has to be Heinz.
