For the first time in Bangladesh, Hajj pilgrims can now avail of international roaming services using their local mobile balance (Taka) instead of foreign currency. This long-anticipated regulatory breakthrough will significantly ease communication for over 87,000 Bangladeshi pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj in 2025 by Grameenphone.

This landmark facility has been made possible through the tireless efforts of telecom industry, which has led the initiative in partnership with government authorities. A special government circular has been issued allowing this provision for the two-month Hajj period in 2025, responding to a longstanding request from telecom operators.

Previously, pilgrims had to queue up upon arrival in Saudi Arabia to purchase foreign SIM cards, often facing delays and difficulties in staying connected with family members. With this new regulation in place, pilgrims can activate Grameenphone’s Hajj Roaming Packs directly using their local mobile balance, enabling immediate and seamless connectivity upon landing in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, customers can conveniently purchase these packs using their mobile balance or through a simple recharge—anytime, from anywhere.

Grameenphone’s Hajj roaming packs offer highly competitive rates. These packs are designed to ensure maximum value, extensive coverage, and top-quality service throughout the pilgrims’ stay. The package details will be available on the Grameenphone website and MyGP app.

Solaiman Alam, Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Grameenphone, said “Grameenphone is proud to lead this transformative step forward for our Hajj pilgrims. We have worked closely with the industry, government and regulatory bodies to make this possible, ensuring that our customers can enjoy the comfort of instant connectivity with their loved ones during such a spiritually significant journey.”

He also added, “This groundbreaking initiative is set to enhance the overall Hajj experience for Bangladeshi pilgrims, ensuring they remain connected, informed, and at peace during one of the most important journeys of their lives.”
