A group of students from the Department of Software Engineering at the University of Dhaka’s Institute of Information Technology (IIT) has launched the Emergency Flood Aid Network, an online platform designed to coordinate relief efforts for victims of the ongoing flash floods in Bangladesh. The website, officially launched on August 25, aims to centralize information and streamline assistance for those affected by the floods.

The platform features a user-friendly search bar allowing individuals to find help based on district, upazila, name, or phone number in both Bengali and English. The website also uses a colour-coded map to highlight areas with the most urgent needs, with darker colours representing regions requiring greater assistance. Users seeking relief can view detailed data cards containing addresses, phone numbers, and Google Maps locations of rescue and relief requests. The website’s ‘Reach Ground Team‘ tab connects volunteers with teams on the ground, while an operations status section tracks the progress of ongoing rescue missions, marking them as unprocessed, processing, or resolved.

Fahmid Ahmed, one of the website’s creators, stated, “The need for a centralized platform was clear, especially in managing and verifying information during this crisis. While the site is already functional, we are also working on integrating AI capabilities, though that will take more time.” Currently, 38 people are actively involved in managing the platform, which has already begun assisting flood victims across various districts. The team is encouraging users on social media to share updates using the hashtag #bangladeshflood2024, helping to aggregate data and improve coordination efforts.

As the floods continue to impact large areas of Bangladesh, the Emergency Flood Aid Network is providing much-needed support to both victims and volunteers, offering a more organized and effective way to respond to the crisis.
