Different Teams, One Table: Barilla’s ‘Tastes Like Family’ Campaign

Formula 1 is a world where every second counts. Drivers fight for the same podium, mechanics race against the clock, and teams spend months searching for an advantage over their competitors. Yet, away from the track, a simple plate of pasta once gave people from different teams a reason to sit together. Barilla’s global campaign, ‘Tastes Like Family’, brings this story to life through Luigi Montanini, better known as Pasticcino, an Italian cook who found an unexpected place for friendship in the high-pressure world of Formula 1.

Montanini first entered the racing paddock in 1979, bringing his cooking to a setting better known for roaring engines and fierce competition than shared meals. Without a proper kitchen or dining room, he made do with whatever was available, serving pasta on car hoods and folding tables. Drivers, mechanics and engineers gathered around his food, sometimes putting aside their team rivalries to enjoy a meal together. In a sport where people are often separated by team colours and competing ambitions, these informal gatherings created a different kind of connection.

This story fits naturally with Barilla, the Italian pasta brand founded in Parma in 1877. Pasta is a familiar part of Italian family life, where preparing and sharing food often means more than simply satisfying hunger. Through Montanini’s experience, Barilla connects that everyday tradition to an unusual setting, showing how a meal can create a sense of belonging even among people who spend their working lives competing against one another.

Directed by Stefano Sollima, the campaign’s main film follows the atmosphere of the racing paddock and the people who came together around Montanini’s cooking. Rather than focusing on lap times, trophies or the drama of a race, the story centres on the moments between competitions, when people can put their professional roles aside and share something familiar. The film’s music, composed by Oscar-winning musician Nicola Piovani, helps give the story an emotional tone, while the visual identity by designer Leonardo Sonnoli gives the campaign a distinctive look.

The idea also speaks to a familiar change in everyday life: people can spend much of their time surrounded by others while still missing meaningful moments of connection. Research cited in campaign coverage suggests that 63% of people eat alone during the week. Against that backdrop, Montanini’s makeshift dining tables offer a simple reminder of what shared meals can provide. The appeal lies in the act itself, rather than in an elaborate setting or a carefully planned occasion. A plate of pasta is enough to bring people together, even when they have little else in common.

Barilla carried the campaign across television, digital platforms, outdoor advertising and social media, inviting audiences to share their own experiences of food and togetherness through #TastesLikeFamily. The story also connects with the brand’s wider presence in motorsport, including its role as Formula 1’s Official Pasta Partner. Instead of treating the sport only as a platform for visibility, the campaign finds a human story within its culture and uses it to communicate what the brand represents.

By bringing this little-known story from the Formula 1 paddock to a global audience, Barilla shows how food can create connections in the most unexpected places. Formula 1 is built around competition, but Montanini’s story reveals a quieter side of the paddock, where a shared meal could bring rivals together without asking them to stop being rivals. Barilla turns this moment into a reminder that connection does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it begins with a plate of pasta, a place to sit and a little time to eat together.
