Chinese solar panel giant Longi is set to establish an office and invest in solar panel manufacturing in Bangladesh, marking a significant step in deepening economic ties between the two nations, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen announced today (March 16), reportedly.

The announcement follows a visit by several top Chinese solar manufacturers in December, who explored investment opportunities in Bangladesh. Their interest was sparked after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus extended an invitation to Chinese companies, encouraging them to relocate their manufacturing plants as part of Bangladesh’s broader vision to become an economic hub.

According to a press release from the CA Press Wing, at least two Chinese firms, including Longi, have now decided to set up offices and manufacturing plants in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Yao Wen highlighted that Chinese businesses have been the largest investors in Bangladesh since August 5, when a political shift took place. He also noted that dozens of Chinese companies are preparing to invest in Bangladesh, with a dedicated Chinese export processing zone expected to become operational soon.

Looking ahead, the upcoming official visit of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to China is expected to be a landmark event in the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations. Yao Wen described Bangladesh and China as “trustworthy and close friends.”

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus welcomed the growing Chinese interest in Bangladesh, stating that the country is positioned to become a leading manufacturing hub for companies looking to export to Western markets.

He also encouraged Chinese hospital chains to establish high-quality medical clinics in Bangladesh or to form joint ventures with local healthcare providers. Responding to this, Ambassador Yao Wen revealed that four hospitals in Kunming, China, have been dedicated to treating Bangladeshi patients, with a group of Bangladeshis having already traveled there for medical care last week.

During the visit, Peking University, one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, will confer an honorary doctorate on Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. He is also scheduled to deliver a speech at the university.

Additionally, Yunus will participate in the Boao Forum for Asia, often referred to as the “Davos of the East.” This high-profile event brings together world leaders and top CEOs to discuss key global economic and political issues. His speech will focus on “Asia in a Changing World: Towards a Shared Future.” China’s Executive Vice Premier is also expected to join him during the session.

On March 28, Chief Adviser Yunus is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the first bilateral foreign visit of his tenure. Following their discussions, Bangladesh and China will issue a joint statement, outlining new areas of cooperation and shared interests.

With increasing investments, strategic partnerships, and high-level engagements, the Bangladesh-China relationship appears to be entering a new phase of economic and diplomatic collaboration.
