Have you ever imagined playing football against yourself? Have you ever considered testing yourself in central midfield or attempting to save one of your own penalties? Everybody has. In Adidas’ new film, we watch the world’s best player competing against himself in one of football’s most iconic rituals: the rondo.

Following Nike’s release of the “Footballverse,” a commercial in which unforgettable versions of players such as Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, and Cristiano Ronaldo faced off against one other, adidas has responded by releasing a love letter short video to Argentine fans all around the world.

The world-famous brand launched The Impossible Rondo, a 30-second short that brings Messi’s World Cup career to life using the latest artificial intelligence and VFX technologies, as the next chapter in their Impossible is Nothing storyline. Combining original footage of the Argentine forward from 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, adidas does the unimaginable with a one-of-a-kind Messi against Messi rondo warm-up.

Messi’s historical and recent videos were used to develop his distinct outlook, younger versions of him, complete with his haircuts, Argentina shirts, and Adidas boots from the past five tournaments. This was then used on body doubles to bring the ‘impossible’ warm-up to life.

The technology involved in combining green screens with authentic archive video is impressive, but the real magic here is that we get to watch five distinct versions of Messi playing football together. And there’s something dreamy about that image for football fans who can trace their lives via Messi’s progression from wonder-kid to GOAT.
