Bengal Rain Bank: When a Billboard Started Saving Rainwater

What if a billboard could do more than ask you to buy something, and instead become something people could actually use? In Sylhet, Bengal Plastics turned an ordinary advertising space into a rainwater collection system, using one of Bangladesh’s most familiar natural resources to create a practical solution. When the rain came down, the billboard did not simply sit there displaying an advertisement. It collected the rain and turned it into something that could be saved.

Launched in 2015, Bengal Plastics’ “Bengal Rain Bank” campaign used Sylhet’s rainy climate to deliver a simple message about saving water. Sylhet is known as Bangladesh’s tea capital and is also one of the country’s wettest regions. This made it a natural place for a campaign built around rainwater harvesting. Bengal Plastics described the initiative as the first billboard in Bangladesh designed to save rainwater, carrying the message “পানি জমান টাকা বাঁচান”, or “Save water, save money.”

The billboard was designed to show how a simple household product could be used in a more practical way. The large structure was fitted with 15 Bengal buckets that collected rainwater as it fell. Instead of letting the water simply run away, the buckets allowed it to be collected and stored. People were not just looking at an advertisement for buckets. They could see the product doing the job the campaign was talking about.

Sylhet’s heavy rainfall gave Bengal Plastics a chance to make the campaign feel closely connected to its surroundings rather than placing the same idea on a billboard anywhere in the country. Bangladesh receives a large amount of rainfall every year, and Sylhet is particularly famous for its frequent and heavy rain. The campaign used this local reality as part of the creative idea. The rain was not just the background of the campaign. It was the main part of it.

Rainwater harvesting also has a practical connection to Bangladesh’s wider water challenges, especially in places where people may not always have easy access to safe water. Collecting rainwater can provide another source of water for certain household needs. The idea has also been explored in Bangladesh as a possible solution in areas where groundwater or surface water is difficult to access. Bengal Rain Bank brought this larger issue into a simple advertising idea that people could immediately understand.

The campaign allowed Bengal Plastics to connect its own products with an environmental message without making the billboard feel like a normal product advertisement. Bengal Plastics makes a range of plastic household products, including buckets, so the company could have simply displayed the product and talked about its features. Instead, the buckets became part of the solution. They showed people how something as ordinary as a bucket could help collect and save rainwater.

The campaign also connects with Bengal Plastics’ wider focus on environmental initiatives. The company has highlighted initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy, recycled materials and tree plantation. One of its factories also received LEED Gold certification.

What makes Bengal Rain Bank interesting from a marketing perspective is that the billboard itself became part of the message instead of simply communicating the message. Most outdoor advertisements try to grab attention by becoming bigger, brighter or more dramatic. Bengal Rain Bank took a different approach by making the billboard useful. It connected the local environment, an everyday product and a simple message about saving water.
