xAI Introduces Image Generation API, Expanding Its AI Capabilities1 min read
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has taken a major leap forward by adding image generation to its API, marking another step in its expansion into the competitive AI landscape reportedly.
Currently, the API offers a single model, “grok-2-image-1212”, which can generate up to 10 images per request in JPG format. Users can submit five requests per second, with pricing set at $0.07 per image.
For context, xAI’s pricing lands between its rivals. Black Forest Labs, which collaborated with xAI last year to bring image generation to Musk’s social platform, X, charges around $0.05 per image. Meanwhile, Ideogram, another leading AI image generator, sets its pricing as high as $0.08 per image.
While the API is still evolving, xAI currently does not support adjustments for quality, size, or style. Additionally, all prompts are subject to revision by a “chat model”, as stated in the company’s documentation.

Since launching its API in October 2024, xAI has been actively seeking new revenue streams to support the growing demands of AI model training and development. The company is reportedly in discussions with investors for a potential $10 billion funding round, which could push its valuation to a staggering $75 billion.
Beyond image generation, xAI is also expanding its AI ambitions. The company recently acquired a generative AI video startup and is scaling up its Memphis-based data center, which plays a key role in training its flagship models, including Grok 3.
With its latest move into AI-generated visuals, xAI is signaling big plans for the future, solidifying its presence in the ever-growing world of artificial intelligence.
