Mymensingh’s Muktagachha upazila is gearing up for a transformative shift as Muktagacha Solartech Energy Limited (MSEL) prepares to launch its 20-megawatt Muktagacha solar power plant this June. Construction of the Tk320 crore project, spanning 70 acres of previously inaccessible wetland, is progressing at full speed reportedly.
The plant, a subsidiary of Joules Power Limited (JPL), will supply electricity to the local Palli Bidyut Samity grid at Tk8.12 per unit. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the local grid currently meets only 60%-70% of demand, which fluctuates between 30 MW in winter and 50 MW in summer.

Construction began in June 2024, transforming waterlogged, fallow land into a hub of renewable energy. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project avoids filling wetlands by using pillars, ensuring an environmental balance. Once operational, the plant is expected to generate 37.9 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 18,344 tonnes per year.
The project has already created 1,978 jobs for local residents during the construction phase, with plans to prioritize local hiring for operational roles. Landowners are also benefiting economically, with 70 acres leased for 22 years at an annual rate of Tk48,000 per acre. Abdul Malek, a local landowner, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to uplift the region.
Mehedul Islam, a project spokesperson, highlighted the broader economic benefits, including improved living standards and opportunities for regional development. The Muktagachha solar power plant stands as a beacon of progress, promising a brighter and greener future for Mymensingh.
