Meta’s Llama AI Models Surpass 1 Billion Downloads Amid Growing Competition

Meta’s AI model family, Llama, has officially hit a major milestone – 1 billion downloads, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a brief Threads post on Tuesday morning. That marks a 53% surge since early December 2024 when downloads stood at 650 million, reportedly.

Llama, the backbone of Meta AI, powers the company’s virtual assistant across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It’s part of Meta’s broader mission to build a dominant AI ecosystem, offering these models and customization tools for free under a proprietary license.

Despite Llama’s popularity, not everyone is on board. Some developers and businesses have criticized Meta’s licensing terms for being commercially restrictive. Yet, Llama’s adoption remains strong, with major companies like Spotify, AT&T, and DoorDash leveraging its capabilities.

However, Meta hasn’t had a smooth ride. Llama is at the center of a major AI copyright lawsuit, with allegations that Meta trained its models using copyrighted e-books without permission. Privacy concerns in several EU countries have also forced Meta to delay or cancel Llama’s rollout in some regions.

Beyond legal hurdles, competition is heating up. Llama has been overtaken in performance by Chinese AI lab DeepSeek’s R1, pushing Meta into what insiders describe as an AI “war room” to accelerate Llama’s evolution. The company is now gearing up to spend up to $80 billion on AI-related projects this year to stay ahead.

Looking forward, Meta has ambitious plans. New Llama models set for release in the coming months will feature improved reasoning abilities – akin to OpenAI’s o3-mini – and multimodal capabilities that process text, images, and more. Mark Zuckerberg has also teased “agentic” AI features, hinting at models that can autonomously take actions.

For a deeper look into what’s next, all eyes are on LlamaCon, Meta’s first-ever generative AI developer conference, happening on April 29. Expect big AI announcements that could reshape the landscape.
