GP Academy | Addressing The Age-Old Question!3 min read

“The world is moving fast,” but how exactly is this happening? This is a multi-dimensional perception where changes do not follow a specific definition. Such a transformational process opens up a lot of new chapters and opportunities, which ultimately creates a path for innovation.

We all would agree that such changes bring uncertainties. Now that we have more or less been introduced to a BANI world (brittle, anxious, nonlinear, and incomprehensible) – we keep on questioning our choices. Choices that matter in our personal and professional life. And this is where a whole new subject starts to appear, which is- upskilling and reskilling.

There is an age-old question that is very popular with everyone:

“Does the academic curriculum support the industry requirements for the graduates?”

The answer to this question depends on multiple factors, and such factors vary from person to person. But at the end of the day, this simple question creates anxiety and doubt among all the graduates.

Indeed there is a gap between expectation and reality. On the other hand, it becomes difficult for the graduates to find the relevant and employable skills that can add value to their transformational journey. Connecting all of these gaps, on May 18, 2022, Grameenphone launched their digital upskilling platform- GP Academy, which is an excellent output of the partnerships with skill expert organizations, industry, and academia.

As much as this platform brings the academic and industry experts together, this brand new idea is also a hybrid learning model which promotes online learning and community support. This speaks volumes about the social impact that Grameenphone is trying to create with this initiative.

The aspiration to prepare future-ready graduates started with 300 GP Explorers, now accessible to everyone in Bangladesh. In association with CISCO Networking Academy, GP Academy exhibits the collaboration between academia and industry, which is happening for the first time to address that age-old question.

The richness of this platform does not end with such a partnership. The content designed for GP Academy aimed for both engagement and interaction. During the launch of the digital upskilling platform, five different areas were introduced:

  • i) Career Launchpad,
  • ii) Accelerate Entrepreneurship,
  • iii) Introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • iv) Introduction to Cybersecurity, and
  • v) Programming Essentials with Python.

Accumulating all these five areas in the initial stage of the launch is part of the MVP (minimal viable product) phase, and the learning will not be limited to courses only. There will be MasterClasses by Industry Leaders, Campus Townhalls, Learning Challenges, Expert Sessions, Women in S.T.E.M. workshops, etc.

With so many dimensions, GP Academy is set to mark its strong presence as the 360-degree skill development hub, which can be a great start in bridging the gap between academia and industry. Undoubtedly, GP Academy is a promising idea with much potential in building a future-ready nation with young talent.
