BAT Bangladesh has appointed Professor Dr. Melita Mehjabeen as its new Independent Director in a board meeting held on 12th November 2024. With about 20 years of proven track record in academia, research, financial services, consulting, and board roles, Professor Mehjabeen brings both professional and institutional knowledge and expertise to the board.

Professor Mehjabeen, PhD, has established herself as a distinguished academic, recognized for creating dynamic and engaging learning environments for her students and her unwavering commitment to education and professional development. As a tenured faculty member at IBA, Dhaka University, the premier business school in Bangladesh, she has been teaching a wide range of courses on finance, accounting, ethics and leadership courses.

Her passion for corporate governance and sustainability has not only guided her teaching but also shaped her professional career. Professor Mehjabeen earned her PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, focusing on CSR reporting practices in Bangladesh. Over the years, this passion for sustainability and governance has driven her to conduct impactful research and training in collaboration with various institutions.  In addition to her academic pursuits, her roles as an Independent Director and Chair of Audit and NRC Committees on multiple boards, including Unilever Consumer Care Ltd. and National Bank Ltd., have enriched her expertise in governance and stakeholder management. This unique blend of academic rigor and boardroom experience highlights her ability to make significant contributions to corporate leadership and governance. Apart from her illustrious academic experience, Professor Mehjabeen also excelled in her corporate career. She worked as the product sales manager at Citibank, N.A., the largest financial institution globally and as a management trainee at BAT Bangladesh. Her diverse consulting experience, ranging from developing leadership and financial literacy programs to fostering green skills for sustainable growth, adds depth to her expertise in stakeholder engagement.

Her combined corporate and consultancy insights, along with experience in liaising across government and private sectors, will support BAT Bangladesh’s board in fostering strong stakeholder relationships.

Professor Mehjabeen said about her new responsibility, “I am always driven by a passion for continuous learning. While performing my role as an Independent Director, I will try my best, to collaborate effectively with my fellow board members, to make a positive impact and bring about meaningful changes in corporate practices leveraging my experience as an academic and an industry professional.”
