Instagram Introduces ‘Blend’ to Curate Personalized Reels Feed With Friends2 min read
Instagram has unveiled a new feature called Blend, designed to enhance social interaction by creating a shared, personalized Reels feed for you and your friends. Officially launched on Thursday, this invite-only feature lets users build a custom Reels experience either in one-on-one chats or group conversations. Each Blend is refreshed daily with new content tailored to the interests of its members.
This addition had been anticipated since March 2024, when TechCrunch first reported Instagram’s plans to develop such a feature.
Once users accept a Blend invite, they gain access to a curated Reels feed based on the collective preferences of everyone in the chat. As members react to individual Reels, Instagram sends updates within the direct message (DM) conversation, encouraging ongoing interaction and dialogue.
The core idea behind Blend is to help friends discover content together, fostering a deeper social experience on Instagram. By highlighting each other’s interests and promoting shared content discovery, Blend brings Instagram back to its original essence of connecting users with their close circles – an aspect that has been somewhat eclipsed by the growing dominance of influencers and sponsored content.

Unlike rival TikTok, which doesn’t currently offer a similar feature, Instagram’s Blend introduces a unique social twist to short-form video consumption. It may also serve as a new method to boost engagement and time spent watching Reels.
To start a Blend, users need to enter a DM – either one-on-one or in a group – tap the new Blend icon at the top, and then send an invite. Once at least one person accepts, the Blend feed activates. Users can revisit their Blend at any time by opening the chat and tapping the Blend icon again.
Instagram’s Blend concept draws a parallel to Spotify’s similarly named feature, where users combine music preferences into a shared playlist that updates daily – adding a familiar and interactive layer to content sharing.
