$30 Million Investment to Enhance Patenga Container Terminal’s Capacity

Chattogram’s Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) is set to receive a major operational boost with a $30 million investment for four advanced ship-to-shore (STS) cranes. The initiative, led by Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) Bangladesh, aims to increase efficiency and accommodate larger vessels at the port stated in a report.

The terminal operator has signed an agreement with Chinese firm SANY Marine Heavy Industry for the purchase of the cranes. This investment follows a recent acquisition of 14 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) worth $26 million.

With the arrival of the new equipment, expected by early next year, PCT’s annual container handling capacity is projected to surge from 250,000 TEUs to 600,000 TEUs. The upgrade is anticipated to enhance efficiency and reduce logistics costs, strengthening Bangladesh’s maritime trade infrastructure.

This marks another significant step in our efforts to improve terminal operations, expressed by RSGT Bangladesh CEO Erwin Haaze. He emphasized that the enhancements will create a more cost-effective supply chain for the country’s trade sector.

RSGT Bangladesh, the country’s first international terminal operator, is collaborating with the Chittagong Port Authority and other key stakeholders to streamline operations. As the first private terminal in Bangladesh, the company remains committed to advancing the nation’s maritime and logistics capabilities.

The investment comes as part of a long-term agreement between RSGT and Chattogram port, following a 22-year concession deal signed in December 2023. Since beginning partial operations in June last year, the terminal has handled export containers using geared vessels equipped with onboard cranes.

The addition of the new STS cranes, scheduled for deployment in early 2026, is expected to further solidify Chattogram’s position as a key regional trade hub.
