Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the smartphone market saw a downturn in 2020 as the effects of the pandemic halted manufacturing in key markets of China and Asia in tandem with a fall in demand due to shutdowns and economic downturn.
The first quarter of 2021, however, has seen recovery as smartphone sales increased up to 26% globally, per Gartner.
Samsung returned to the number 1 spot in the first quarter with growth in market share to 20.3% from 18.4%. Apple later regained its position in Q4 with an increase in market share of 2% YoY to 15.5%. Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo were also in the top 5 market leaders of the industry.
