In a welcome turn of events for X users, headlines are once again becoming visible in link previews. The revival begins with the web version of the app, with plans to extend the feature to other platforms. Notably, the headline now occupies a slightly different position, while the preview text is omitted.
The modified X link preview format, showcasing a basic headline over the article image, is touted as a more aesthetically pleasing design, as per X owner Elon Musk’s preferences. However, compared to the previous version that displayed the header image, title, and link preview text, the new format provides less contextual information.
This change originated in October when Elon Musk, expressing a personal preference, instructed X to remove all text from link previews to enhance their aesthetic appeal. However, in November, after facing criticism from followers, Elon decided to reintroduce headlines, resulting in the current format.
While the current format may be considered objectively less appealing, the reintroduction of headlines offers a practical advantage for social media managers who can now compose posts within the app without having to separately reshare headlines. Despite this improvement, it represents a downgrade from the more informative previous link preview option.
The timeline for rolling out link headlines to all users and platforms remains undisclosed as of now. Users can anticipate a return to a more contextual link preview experience, providing additional information at a glance.
