Reddit Is Ending 'Live Chat' In Subreddits

Reddit is discontinuing its “Live Chat” option within communities, according to a recent update in the Reddit changelog listing. This decision is part of Reddit’s ongoing efforts to streamline its chat products. Live Chat, which allows users to engage in real-time text-based conversations during the posting process, will be disabled for both new and existing communities. As reported, existing Live Chat posts are expected to be converted into standard posts with comments by early 2024.

While Live Chat becomes a thing of the past, Reddit users will still have access to Chat Channels, which were introduced in April to encourage more interactive conversations within the platform. The move reflects Reddit’s strategy to enhance efficiency by focusing on more widely used features, aligning with the platform’s commitment to refining and optimizing its functionality. Reportedly, this decision follows Reddit’s experimentation with various live engagement options, including Chat Channels, live audio chats, and live streaming. By retiring the less-utilized Live Chat feature, Reddit aims to improve user experience and engagement by concentrating on more popular and effective tools.

As reported, although the removal of Live Chat might impact users who were accustomed to real-time text-based conversations, Chat Channels will continue to serve as an alternative for hosting live discussions within the app. Despite these changes, Reddit remains dedicated to offering a diverse range of engaging features to its user base. In addition to discontinuing Live Chat, Reddit is exploring ways to enhance subreddit discovery.

A new topic ranking listing at the top of specific communities will help users discover related subreddits by tapping on a particular topic, promoting broader exploration and interaction across the platform. These developments are part of Reddit’s broader strategy to evolve its platform, providing users with improved tools for community engagement and content discovery.
