For global philanthropy and children’s rights advocacy, Muhammed Aziz Khan has been announced as the incoming Chair of the UNICEF International Council. This announcement comes as UNICEF seeks to strengthen its leadership and mobilize resources to address the ongoing challenges facing children worldwide. Khan, a prominent figure in the Bangladeshi business community and the founder chairman of Summit Group, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role. His appointment follows the tenure of Maria Ahlstrom-Bondestam and is set to commence in November 2024.

The UNICEF International Council comprises approximately 150 private philanthropists and partners, including influential figures from leading business families around the world. Together, they form a distinguished community committed to leveraging their resources, expertise, and leadership to support UNICEF’s mission. Since joining the council in 2022, Khan and his family have demonstrated a strong commitment to philanthropy and children’s welfare, particularly in their native Bangladesh. Their contributions have encompassed initiatives ranging from education and healthcare to addressing social issues such as drug addiction and violence against women and children.

In response to the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Khan has prioritized efforts to facilitate the return of children to classrooms and mitigate the impact of lost schooling. His emphasis on education as a fundamental driver of societal progress underscores his vision for a brighter future for children worldwide.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Kitty van der Heijden praised Khan’s appointment, highlighting the council’s track record of delivering impactful solutions for children globally. Under Khan’s leadership, the council aims to expand its membership and enhance its role as a catalyst for strategic philanthropy dedicated to children’s rights. With a focus on strategic investments in education, healthcare, climate resilience, and amplifying youth voices, the UNICEF International Council under Khan’s stewardship is poised to make a tangible difference in the lives of children and communities around the world.
