Local Mobile Production Surges in February1 min read

The surge in production reflects the growing capacity and competitiveness of Bangladesh’s mobile phone manufacturing industry. Notably, the increase comes after a period of fluctuation, with production experiencing both rises and falls in recent months. In November 2023, local production peaked at 2.43 million units, showcasing the industry’s potential for expansion. Reportedly, this was followed by consecutive declines in December 2023 and January 2024, with production levels dropping to 2.11 million units and 1.89 million units, respectively.

As reported, the latest data reveals a resurgence in production, with February witnessing a rebound in output. Of the 2.15 million units manufactured during the month, a significant portion featured 2G technology, totaling 1.22 million units. Additionally, 922,000 units were equipped with 4G technology, while a small fraction of 2,660 units boasted 5G capabilities.

Interestingly, the proportion of smartphones in the production mix saw a notable increase, rising to 43.07% of total production in February compared to just 18.80% in January. This underscores a shift in consumer preferences towards more advanced mobile devices. Furthermore, the data highlights a decline in the import of mobile phones during February, signaling a potential boost to the domestic manufacturing sector. The import of 5G-enabled phones saw a notable decrease, with all 2,840 units imported during the month falling under this category.

The resurgence in local mobile phone production not only underscores the country’s technological advancements but also signifies its growing self-sufficiency in meeting domestic demand. As Bangladesh continues to strengthen its position in the global technology landscape, the mobile phone manufacturing sector is poised for further growth and innovation.
