Instagram’s Edits App Surpasses 7 Million Downloads in First Week, Outpacing CapCut’s Early Growth2 min read
Instagram’s new video creation app, Edits, made a striking entrance into the market, outperforming ByteDance’s CapCut during its initial launch. Within just the first two days, Edits recorded an estimated 702,900 downloads on iOS alone, a figure roughly 37 times higher than what CapCut achieved during the same timeframe, based on data from app intelligence provider Appfigures reportedly.
By Thursday, Edits had reached 1.2 million downloads on iOS and another 5.9 million on Android, amassing a combined total of 7.1 million downloads. For comparison, CapCut only garnered around 83,500 downloads across both platforms during its first three days. Although CapCut was initially available in only about half of global markets, even a significant adjustment to those early numbers would still leave Edits far ahead.
In the U.S. market specifically, Edits recorded 381,000 downloads within its first three days, compared to just 3,400 downloads for CapCut at its U.S. debut. This meant Edits outperformed CapCut by a staggering 112 times in this region alone.
Edits’ rapid adoption also translated into a high App Store ranking, which likely fueled additional downloads and intensified competition. The app’s performance highlighted the immense advantage Meta’s ecosystem provides when launching new apps designed to integrate with its broader social media platforms.

On its launch day, April 22, Edits topped the U.S. iPhone App Store charts, ranking No. 1 in both the Top Overall Apps and the Top Apps excluding games. By the second day, it slipped slightly to No. 2 in both categories, holding that spot before moving to No. 3 by Friday. The App Store rankings, driven by download numbers and installation speed, positioned Edits well above CapCut’s early showing, with CapCut ranking No. 14 Overall and No. 10 among top non-game apps during its initial days.
Despite its impressive start, Edits still faces a significant journey to match CapCut’s total user base. Since its launch in April 2020, CapCut has accumulated approximately 1.22 billion downloads globally, excluding China.
Early feedback on Edits from creators has been mixed, according to social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman. Users have praised its user-friendly design, built-in analytics, absence of ads, support for 4K video, and ability to export videos without watermarks. However, critics pointed out the lack of certain features available in CapCut, such as templates and a wide array of transition effects.
As Edits evolves, it has the potential to close the feature gap with CapCut. There is also speculation that Instagram may eventually introduce a paid tier or incorporate ads as part of its monetization strategy.
