Instagram has officially launched its long-anticipated standalone video editing app, Edits, aiming to offer creators an all-in-one solution for streamlined video production. Positioned as a direct competitor to TikTok-owned CapCut, this launch also comes at a strategic time amid rising uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the U.S reportedly.

The Edits app is designed to simplify the often-complex process of video creation, eliminating the need for juggling multiple platforms. Instagram’s new tool provides a robust suite of features that allow users to produce, manage, and share high-quality content efficiently.

At launch, Edits includes:

  • Multi-channel editing: A timeline-based editing interface that supports multiple video streams, enabling more dynamic clip assembly.
  • Project management tools: Users can manage several ongoing projects through a dedicated “Projects” tab for easy access and organization.
  • Note-taking feature: A built-in space for jotting down creative ideas and attaching notes to saved Reels for future reference.
  • Reels trend integration: A tool to explore trending Reels and popular audio clips, helping guide creative direction based on current trends.
  • Extended video recording: The app supports capturing videos up to 10 minutes long –significantly longer than the three-minute recording cap in the Instagram app.
  • Special effects: Users can apply green screen effects, isolate objects or people using cutouts, and animate static items with AI tools.
  • Watermark-free export: Videos can be directly uploaded to Instagram or downloaded for use across other platforms without watermarks.
  • Additional tools: Captions, royalty-free music, and full analytics access are also part of the feature package.

Instagram plans to enhance Edits even further with upcoming updates. These include advanced keyframe editing, AI-generated backgrounds for scenes, collaborative content creation tools, new fonts, text animations, transitions, sound effects, voice effects, and filters. These features will likely appear in Edits first before potentially being added to the main Instagram app.

While the app is currently free, some AI-powered features may become paid in the future due to computing resource requirements. However, Instagram aims to keep most tools accessible without cost. For now, users can download Edits on iOS and Android and log in using their Instagram credentials.

With its extensive feature set and no initial cost, Edits offers a compelling option for creators looking to upgrade their video editing workflow directly within the Instagram ecosystem.
