In response to user demand for increased control over their messaging experience, Instagram has officially rolled out a long-awaited feature that allows users to disable read receipts in direct messages (DMs). This new capability enables users to manage when “Read” and “Seen” indicators appear, providing a level of privacy and control within message streams.

The update, which was initially announced in November, is now live, and users can easily activate the feature within each individual chat. By tapping on a user’s name or group chat name, users can navigate to “Privacy & Safety” and toggle off the “Read Receipts” option.

Reportedly, this feature comes as a relief to those who prefer not to broadcast when they have read a message, offering a way to keep conversations more discreet and avoid unnecessary pressure to respond promptly. Users now have the flexibility to remove the “Seen” notification and maintain an element of suspense for the sender.

The convenience extends further, as users also have the option to disable read receipts for all users in their “Messages and Story Replies” settings. This streamlines the process, allowing individuals to apply the opt-out setting universally rather than on a per-chat basis.

Beyond personal use, the update may prove beneficial for brands managing customer expectations. While prompt responses are essential, the ability to turn off read receipts could help mitigate potential customer dissatisfaction, providing businesses with a tool to navigate communication on the platform more effectively.

The introduction of this feature addresses a longstanding request from Instagram users and adds another layer of customization to social media interactions. As users continue to seek more control over their digital interactions, this update represents a positive step towards a more tailored and user-friendly experience on the popular photo-sharing platform.
