Dr. Rumman Chowdhury, a distinguished data scientist of Bangladeshi origin and CEO & co-founder of Humane Intelligence, has earned a place of honor in TIME magazine’s prestigious TIME 100 AI list. She commenced her academic pursuits by completing her undergraduate studies in Management Science and Political Science at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Building upon this foundation, she obtained a Master’s of Science in Statistics and Quantitative Methods from Columbia University. Her academic endeavors culminated in a Doctorate Degree in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego, all while concurrently working in Silicon Valley, showcasing her remarkable dedication and versatility.

Dr. Chowdhury’s academic focus has primarily centered on the intersection of data science and social science. She specializes in unveiling human biases through data and assessing the societal impacts of technology. Her work has been instrumental in the emerging field of applied algorithmic ethics, which grapples with the ethical implications of AI and machine learning technologies. A pivotal moment in Dr. Chowdhury’s career was her role as the Director of Engineering for Twitter’s Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability (META) team, a position she held from February 2021 to November 2022. During her tenure, she tirelessly worked to align Twitter’s AI algorithms with strict ethical guidelines, ensuring a more responsible and transparent platform.

In a groundbreaking event held in Las Vegas, Dr. Chowdhury co-organized an event that brought together around 4,000 hackers. Participants were challenged to identify vulnerabilities in chatbots developed by tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Hackers were awarded points for persuading AI systems to break their own rules, revealing ethical boundaries and potential pitfalls in AI technologies. Dr. Chowdhury’s work is emblematic of the growing importance of ethical AI practices as AI systems become increasingly integrated into daily life.
