Bangladesh Ranks 112th in Mobile Internet Speed1 min read

Bangladesh has witnessed a setback in its global ranking for mobile internet speed performance, according to the latest findings from Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for March. Despite advancements made by individual operators, the country now stands at the 112th position out of 148 countries, slipping six spots from the previous report published in February.

As reported, the decline continues as Bangladesh held the 106th position in Ookla’s February report. Moreover, broadband internet in the country also experienced a slight dip, moving from 107th in February to 108th in March, as per the recent Ookla report. March’s report records a median mobile download speed of 24.59 Mbps, a marginal increase from February’s 24.19 Mbps. Meanwhile, Qatar leads the global chart with a median download speed of 313.30 Mbps, up from the previous 286.42 Mbps.

In Bangladesh’s mobile network landscape, Banglalink emerges as the fastest among five providers, with an impressive 89% of results meeting minimum download and upload speeds of 5 Mbps and 1 Mbps, respectively.

The latest Ookla report highlights performance improvements across Banglalink, Grameenphone, Airtel, Robi, and state-owned Teletalk compared to the previous assessment. Banglalink leads the pack in the fourth quarter of 2023 with a median download speed of 26.74 Mbps, followed by Robi at 24.62 Mbps and Airtel at 23.18 Mbps. Grameenphone and Teletalk lag behind with median download speeds of 21.78 Mbps and 6.05 Mbps, respectively.

Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index derives its data from monthly tests conducted by users worldwide, providing a comprehensive comparison of internet speeds across the globe.

Despite strides made by individual operators, Bangladesh faces challenges in maintaining its global ranking for mobile internet speed. The insights from Ookla’s report underscore the need for concerted efforts to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and ensure faster and more reliable internet connectivity for its citizens.
