Coca-Cola Recalls Drinks In Parts Of Europe Over Chemical Contamination1 min read
Coca-Cola has issued a recall for several of its beverages in parts of Europe due to the presence of “higher levels” of chlorate, a chemical that can emerge from chlorine-based disinfectants used in water treatment and food processing reportedly.
The recall primarily affects Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, according to Coca-Cola’s international bottling and distribution branch in Belgium. While only five product lines had been distributed to Britain, Coca-Cola confirmed these had already been sold.
Among the impacted brands are Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid. Additionally, a limited batch of imported cans – specifically Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero – were also affected. These cans, marked with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE, can be identified by checking the base of the can.

Coca-Cola emphasized that there have been no consumer complaints in Britain and assured that they had notified authorities and were working closely with them on the matter.
Health experts warn that excessive exposure to chlorate can lead to thyroid issues, particularly in children and infants. Research suggests that in high concentrations, the chemical can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and even impair the blood’s ability to absorb oxygen.
According to a Coca-Cola spokesperson, the elevated chlorate levels were detected during routine testing at the company’s Ghent production facility in Belgium. While most of the unsold products have already been pulled from store shelves, efforts are ongoing to remove any remaining affected items.
Authorities, including the Food Standards Agency, have launched an investigation into the issue.
